INTRODUCTORY REMARKS.
HE term, Rural Sports, usually comprehends ali those out-door amusements in hich man either pursues wild animals for sport, or competes with an antagonist . racing, by means of the horse, the boat, or his own unaided powers, or indulges ‘manly games of skill, or in artificial modes of locomotion—like swimming, cating, riding, or driving. - The love of sport appears to be inherent in the breast *man, for from the earliest ages we have records of the chase; and whether in ie forests of America, or the squalid streets of our manufacturing towns, the same ste is displayed, though, necessarily, shown in very different ways. Thus, while .e Red Indian employs nearly his whole life in the pursuit of the deer, the buffalo, >the bear, the cotton-spinner of Manchester can only spare time for an occasional bbit-course at the Pomona Gardens, or perhaps a boat-race, or pedestrian match ; -avertheless, the desire is equally implanted in each, and is peculiarly strong nong the natives of the British Islands. Differing in all other respects, as do the ‘nglish, Scotch, and Irish, they yet seem all to unite on this common ground, and 1 to enjoy with equal zest the sports of the field. This is the more remarkable 1 comparing the Irish and Scotch, since their characters are, in most respects, so idely different; for though the Irishman is more like a Frenchman than a -cotchman in most points, yet there is one bond of union between him and his orthern neighbour which nothing seems able to break, viz., their mutual love of ld sports.
