I A HOLIDAY IN SOUTH AFEICA JOHN DUNN. KETCHWAYO LANGALIBALELE. SIKUKUNI. A HOLIDAY IX SOUTH AFBICA BY R. W. LEYLAND, F.R.G.S. AUTHOR OF "ROUND THE WORLD IN 124 DAYS." WITH MAPS AND ILLUSTRATIONS LONDON SAMPSON LOW, MAESTON, SEAELE, AND EIVINGTON LIVERPOOL : GILBERT G. WALMSLEY PEEFACE. " The Affairs " of South Africa have lately engaged much public attention. The following record, therefore, of a short holiday spent in visiting many of the towns and localities brought so prominently into notice may be of some interest. I have endeavoured as far as possible to eliminate anything of a political character from the narrative, though strongly tempted at various times to do other wise. My best thanks are due to several kind friends for valuable information supplied at different points on the journey.
Notably to Bishop Colenso (Natal), Bishop Bousfield (Pretoria), and Bishop Webb (Bloemfontein) ; also to Mr. Farmer (Capetown), Messrs. Montague Davies and Paddon (Kimberley), and Messrs. E. Brooke Smith and MAlister (Port Elizabeth). vi
Preface
. I take this opportunity of again thanking these gentlemen. I am also much indebted for the information supplied by the following excellent works : — " Official Handbook to the Cape and South Africa," by John Noble, Esq. ; S. W. Silver and Co.'s " South Africa ; " Bishop Colenso's " Digest," and Ketchwayo's "Dutchman," with Notes by the Bishop of Natal; Miss Frances E. Colenso's " History of the Zulu War and its Origin." This last-named volume I would strongly recom mend to the perusal of those who are desirous of studying the events which led up to the Zulu War. The illustrations are reproductions of photographs by the autotype process. The map embraces merely the principal divisions and some of the chief towns in my route. E. W. L.
