Preface

. THE first English edition of this work having been exhausted, advantage has been taken of the opportunity thus afforded to have a fresh translation prepared, and a full index added, which, with other incidental improvements and additions, will, it is hoped, thoroughly meet the requirements of the numerous class of students for whom it is specially intended. As the proofs have all passed through the author's hands, the public may also feel satisfied that they here possess a faithful reproduction of the German text. The translator may in fact state that, notwithstanding the acknowledged difficulties presented by Dr. Gneist's terse and vigorous style, he has nowhere found it necessary to depart from a close adherence to the original, in order to produce what he trusts will be found a perfectly clear and fluent version of this standard volume on the English Consti tution.

If German works of this class are too often sacrificed in their English dress, the fault cannot at all events be said to he with the copious and pliant English language itself. A. H. K. University College, London, June, 1887. CONTENTS.
