How this list was built

892,252 listings of free books: 234 for books cited by MIT OpenCourseWare courses and 892,018 from RedLectern’s own list of free books. 886,714 open in RedLectern’s reader; the other 5,538 link to the free copy at its source. The page also lists 1 Project Gutenberg index of works; it is not a book, a free copy or a text of its own.

892,252 listings in all: 234 for books cited by at least one MIT OpenCourseWare course and 892,018 from RedLectern's own list of free books, which no MIT course cites (234 + 892,018 = 892,252). Where RedLectern matched them, several courses' citations of different editions of one book, or a cited book and the same book on RedLectern's own list, share one listing: the 234 cited listings name 277 different print editions between them, each shown on the book's own page. 122 works have a second free text, such as another translation, listed separately. 22,421 works are listed more than once, for example as the separate volumes of a set or as other scans of the same edition; each listing is counted. A book can still be listed more than once, for example under two titles or inside a collection that is also listed: the 886,714 listings marked “Read here” lead to 886,667 different pages in the reader, and 45 of those pages are reached from more than one listing. The page also has 1 Project Gutenberg index of works; it is not counted as a book or a free copy.

Cited books come from the reading lists and syllabi on MIT OpenCourseWare course pages, each citation quoted as the course gives it. A cited book is listed here only if a free copy was found; its details show the edition each course cites next to the free copy offered here, and say plainly when they differ (page numbers, notes or translation). A book an MIT OCW course cites but that has no free copy found isn't listed here; it's still on that course's own page, which says it's cited.

RedLectern's own list was gathered from web searches and from Project Gutenberg's catalog. Free copies were found and checked with AI language-model agents, which opened each link and recorded a quote from the page as evidence that the book is offered free there by its author, its publisher, an open-license host or a public-domain library (never a shadow library or an unofficial upload). A later check fetched each free-copy link outside Project Gutenberg, and AI agents judged the copies a script flagged (other than dead links); where a flagged copy was found to hold only part of the book, its listing says which part (such as “Volume 1 of 2 only”). Project Gutenberg e-texts were not part of that check; some hold only one volume of a longer book, and not every such listing says so. 886,714 listings are tagged “Read here”: the text is reformatted and hosted on this site, with the source and license on the reading page. Every other book listing links out to its free copy at its source. The page also lists 1 Project Gutenberg index of works; it is not a book, a free copy or a text of its own. No model writes or changes a book's text. How RedLectern is built.

Cover art may not match the text edition. Cover images: where one was found, a cover from Open Library matched to the book by ISBN or by title and author, or the cover image on the free copy’s own page (Project Gutenberg, the publisher or the Internet Archive); otherwise Open Library’s cover for the book’s ISBN; when a cover is unavailable, a verified source illustration, available author portrait or public-domain period artwork is shown decoratively.

Popular: ranked by Project Gutenberg’s 30-day download counts (catalog file of September 25, 2026). Books without a count follow, by title.

Built 2026-10-22 from MIT OCW syllabus and reading-list pages, plus RedLectern’s own list of free books. Links to free copies point to the publisher, author, OCW or public-domain source, except the 886,714 tagged “Read here,” reformatted and hosted on this site with the source and license on the reading page.
