Preface

The apostle Paul^ in his Second Epistle to his beloved son Timothy, reminds him of the privileges he had enjoyed in early life amongst his pious relatives^ and rejoices that, under their instructions, he had been initiated into the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make us wise unto salvation through faith, which is in Jesus Christ.

Religious parents, aware of the privilege of instructing their oiFspring in the lively oracles of God, will rejoice in any production which may assist them in this important and delightful undertaking, so that their children may know the Scriptures. Such is the design of this selection : and in order that it may be introduced into Seminaries and Sunday Schools as an introductory classbook, it is divided into short Sections suited to the junior classes. After the book has been read a few times^ the teacher may allow the pupils to repeat, alphabetically, such texts, with the references, as occur to the mind; thus the word will be committed to memory without the imposition of a task, and this method of repeating it will be coniv

sidered by the Pupils as a recreution rather than a lesson.

When Christian friends meet in social company, a dumb spirit sometimes steals a part of their precious time, or some forward formal professor introduces a spirit of slander ; so that the lambs of Christ's flock, instead of being edified by the spiritual conversation of experienced Christians, retire "wounded. To remove the former, and to prevent the latter, a few texts repeated alphabetically round the company, will, through the blessing of God, expel the evil, and prepare the way for social spiritual communion, which, when judiciously conducted, is the nearest resemblance to Mount Sion — to the city of the living God — to that innumerable company of angels — to the general assembly and church of the first-born, we can enjoy in this our militant state. That the Eternal Spirit may accompany his own word with omnipotent power and gracious influence, so as to make many wise unto salvation ; and to comfort, strengthen, and settle the children of God, is the earnest desire and prayer of the most unworthy of those who can rejoice in the unchanging W ord of Jehovah.
