Preface

. In submitting to the Public the late Mr. John Scott's Travels in France and Italy, the Editor has to regret that so small a portion of the Work was left prepared for the Press. In making selections for the sequel of that portion, he has taken all possible care to exclude every thing which might wound the feelings of Mr. Scott's friends ; and he trusts that he shall be found to have been actuated by sincere respect for the memory of that ill-fated and lamented gentleman. The Essay on French Literature, an nexed, was, in substance, published in a Review ; it is here given with additional matter, according to the Author's in tention. VI

PREFACE.

. Other essays and papers, found among the Author's manuscripts, have been with held from publication, for reasons with which it is unnecessary to trouble the reader. They would afford additional proofs, if such were needed, of the generous ardour and unwearied industry in the cul tivation of literature, for which Mr. Scott was so eminently distinguished. SKETCHES OF MANNERS, SCENERY, 8>c. IN THE FRENCH PROVINCES.
