The plan ofthe following Treatise, which originated in Notes taken in the summer of 1828, during two excursions through the North-western Division of Somersetshire, has been considerably enlarged by reference to numerous authorities, and by a more recent personal examination of the places described. The Author, in addition to his own labours, has gratefully to acknowledge the receipt of valuable communications from several literary characters, including a gentleman connected with the Bristol Institution ; George Bennett, solicitor, of Rolston, near Banwell; a lady of Banwell ; David Williams, M.A. F. G. S. rector of Bleadon ; and F. Boucher Wright, F. L. S. of Hintou Blewett. To Sir Richard Colt Hoare, bart. F.R.S. F.S.A. he is also much indebted for the liberal permission of reference to his valuable topographical library at Stourhead; and to J. H. Smyth Pigott, of Brockley Hall.
