FRANCON WILLIAMS, F.R.G.S., Author of "The Geography of the Oceans," &c. J6S" "There is no reason why the work before us should not take the place among the first, if not of itself the first, of geographical class-books. In addition to unfailing accuracy, this book possesses some unusually meritorious features. . . . The amount of information contained in the 400 pages of this admirable class-book is remarkable. And when we state that this is not given in a bald way, but with a fair amount of explanation, and in a readable style, we say nothing more than the book merits, but which few books of the same nature and design possess." — Practical Teacher.

"A work which, for clearness, fulness, and excellence of arrangement, can hardly be surpassed." — Literary World. " I have examined it carefully, and I know no text-book on the same subject that can be compared to it."— T. W. Wallace, Esq., High School, Inverness. FRANCON WILLIAMS, F.R.G.S., Editor of the " Class-Book of Modern Geography," &c. 83s The very favourable reception accorded to the new and enlarged edition of the late Professor Hughes's " Class-Book of Modern Geography," decided the Pub lishers to issue a thoroughly revised and considerably extended edition of tlie companion volume on " Physical Geography," by the same able author.

The necessary alterations and additions .have been carefully made ; the Mountain and River Systems of the globe are now given in full ; and tbe ebapter on the Ocean lias been re-written and extended. A number of specially-prepared maps have also been inserted. Particular attention is directed to the fact that the "Work, in its present form, is the only Physical Geography published, containing a fuU account of the Mountain and River Systems of the globe — a portion of the subject at once important and highly interesting, but which has, hitherto been treated in a very geoeral and necessarily unsatisfactory manner. Preface

. The very favourable reception accorded to the new and enlarged editions of Professor Hughes's " Class Book of Modern Geography," and the " Elementary Class Book of Modern Geography " by the same able Author, indicate that the Editor's work on these Manuals has approved itself to both teachers and students. Looking, however, at the wide difference between the elementary and the advanced " Class Books," an intermediate course seemed desirable if not necessary, hence the present work, which is based upon, and in arrangement and style is uniform with, these Class Books. As in the Advanced Class Book, the Questions, suitable for oral or written examinations, form a special and most valuable feature. J. F. W. MAP-DRAWING. PHILIPS' SERIES OF MAP-DRAWING BOOKS.
