JOINTLY GO. Dryden, TO HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF CUMBERLAND, &c. &c. &c. &c, SIR! Although I am fully aware that a young man of my humble situation, may subject himself to censure for taking so great a liberty as to intrude, unsought and even unknown, an address to a personage of your illustrious rank, yet my choice has been governed by the admiration I entertain for those virtues so eminently conspicuous in your conduct, which, while their practice would in private life have an irresistible claim to our affection, in your exalted situation command at once every emotion of the mind, that can bind the inclinations of inferiors to those whom birth and fortune have placed so far above them. Happy, indeed, is it for the Coma 2 muni-y, munity, when persons who are born or called to such elevated heights, prove indeed a beacon to the anxiously inquisitive eyes of the lowly traveller.

In the duties which have hitherto been called into action, it is not adulatory to fay, that you have followed the Hero of the following History pajfibus equis — A good son, AN AFFECTIONATE BROTHER, A LIBERAL PATRON, A WARM FRIEND, A GENUINE PA' triot, and AN HONEST MAN— these are the attributes with which the world is ac quainted by your actions. I have the Honour to be, With the most respectful Attachment, YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS'S Obliged, obedient, and faithful Servant, John Joseph Stockdale. London, October 1807. t * 1 THE EDITOR'S PREFATORY REMARKS. IT is a cafe by no means uncommon, that zvorks of the mojl genuine authority and value fall into neglect, if not into oblivion, from the non-occurrence of circumstances of a temporary nature to direct the public recollection to the subject of their narratives.
