AI versus data science

Reference

AI vs data science: AI is about building systems that perform tasks such as making predictions or recommendations, while data science is about using data, methods and subject knowledge to find useful answers. The fields overlap: data science can use AI methods, including machine learning, and AI projects can involve data analysis. Which one fits depends on whether the main goal is to build a system that performs a task or to understand and use data.

Two different kinds of work

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad area concerned with systems that produce outputs such as predictions, recommendations or decisions. Data science is an interdisciplinary field that brings together data, computing, statistics and knowledge of the subject being studied to extract useful information. Data science work can include gathering and preparing data, analyzing it, building models and explaining results. AI work may use data and models too, but its focus is the system’s capabilities and behavior. These descriptions are general: the boundaries and terminology can vary by context.

What differs in a project

A data science project often starts with a question about data or a real-world problem: what is happening, what patterns appear, or what might happen next? The work can include collecting, preparing and analyzing data, then communicating what the results mean. Not every data science project needs an AI system; analysis and explanation can be useful on their own. An AI project centers on a system designed to carry out a task associated with human intelligence, such as making a prediction or recommendation. When a task involves learning patterns from data, the work can overlap: preparing and studying data may support building and evaluating the system.

When each is the right focus

Choose a data science focus when the main need is to make sense of data: define a question, find relevant information, investigate patterns and explain what the evidence can support. That work might produce a report, forecast or recommendation without requiring an AI product. Choose an AI focus when the main need is a system that performs a task, such as classifying inputs or recommending an action. A project may need both: data science can help establish what data is useful and whether results make sense, while AI methods can power the system’s task. Start with the outcome you need, then decide whether data analysis, an AI system or both fit.

Common confusions

AI and data science are not interchangeable labels. A dashboard or statistical analysis can be part of data science without being an AI system. Likewise, an AI system is not automatically a complete data science project: it may make predictions or recommendations, while broader data science work can include deciding what to measure, checking data and explaining findings. Machine learning is another related term. It is a set of methods for learning patterns from data; it is used in AI and can also be a tool within data science. If you are choosing what to study, begin with the kind of work you want to do: investigate data and communicate findings, build systems with AI capabilities, or work where the two meet.

Questions people ask

Does data science include AI?

It can. Data science brings together data, computing, statistics and subject knowledge, and AI or machine learning can be among the methods used. Some data science work, such as analyzing data to find useful information, does not require an AI system.

Is machine learning the same as AI or data science?

No. Machine learning is a set of methods for learning patterns from data. It is used in AI and can also be a tool in data science, but neither field is limited to machine learning.

Should I learn data science or artificial intelligence?

If you want to investigate data and explain what it shows, begin with data science. If you want to build systems that perform tasks such as prediction or recommendation, focus on AI. The subjects overlap, so choose based on the kind of problem you want to work on.
