Table of Feast-, Fast- and Abstinence-Days

Table of Feasts and Fasts during the Year.

FESTIVALS OF OBLIGATION.

In addition to the Sundays, the following are holidays of obligation in every diocese of the United States:

Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8.

Nativity of our Lord, Dec. 25.

Circumcision, Jan. 1.

Ascension, forty days after Easter.

Assumption, Aug. 15.

All Saints, Nov. 1.

DAYS OF FASTING.

Every Day in Lent, Sundays excepted.

The Ember Days, which occur four times in the year, viz.: the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday immediately after the first Sunday in Lent; in Whitsunweek; immediately after the 14th of Sept.; and immediately after the 3d Sunday of Advent.

The Vigils of Whit-Sunday, of the Assumption, of All Saints, and of Christmas.

When a fasting day falls upon a Sunday, it is kept on the Saturday before. To last consists in abstaining from fleshmeat, and eating only one full meal in the day which must not be before noon. Besides this, a collation or light refreshment is allowed in the evening. All who have completed their 21st year are obliged to observe the fasts of the Church, unless dispensed or exempted for some legitimate cause.

Many Bishops in the United States, making use of the special power given to them the Holy See, grant to the working people and their families dispensation from the law of Abstinence on all days during the year, excepting the Fridays, Ash-Wednesday, Holy Week and the Vigil of Christmas.

DAYS OF ABSTINENCE.

All Fridays, except when Christmas falls upon a Friday.

Days of abstinence are those on which we are not allowed to eat flesh-meat. All who have attained the age of reason are obliged to observe these days.

The Commandments of God and of the Church

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF GOD.

I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange Gods before me.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

Remember thou keep holy the Sabbath day.

Honor thy Father and thy Mother.

Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods.

THE CHIEF COMMANDMENTS OF THE CHURCH.

To hear Mass on Sundays and holydays of obligation.

To fast and abstain on the days appointed.

To confess at least once a year.

To receive the Holy Eucharist during the Easter time.

To contribute to the support of our pastors.

Not to marry persons who are not Catholics, or who are related to us within the fourth degree of kindred, nor privately without witnesses, nor to solemnize marriage at forbidden times.

Morning Prayers

MORNING PRAYERS.

At awakening in the morning, say:

O my God, my only good, the author of my being and my last end, I give Thee my heart. Praise, honor, and glory be to Thee for ever and ever. Amen.

At rising up, say:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

I will raise myself up from this bed of sleep, to adore my God, and to labor for the salvation of my soul. O may I rise on the last day unto life everlasting.

When clothed, kneel down and say:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Blessed be the holy and undivided Trinity, now and for ever more. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts! The earth is full of Thy Glory. Glory be to the Father: Glory be to the Son: Glory be to the Holy Ghost.

AN ACT OF ADORATION.

O great God, the Sovereign Lord of heaven and earth, I prostrate myself before Thee. With all the angels and saints I adore Thee. I acknowledge Thee to be my Creator and Sovereign Lord, my first beginning and last end. I render to Thee the homage of my being and life. I submit myself to Thy holy will; and I devote myself to Thy divine service this day and forever. I wish and purpose to gain to-day all the indulgences which it is possible for me to gain.

MORNING OFFERING TO THE SACRED HEART.

O Lord Jesus-Christ, in union with that divine intention with which Thou, whilst on earth, didst give praise to God through Thy most sacred Heart, and still dost continue to give praise to Him in the Sacrament of the Eucharist everywhere, even unto the consummation of the world, I, wishing to imitate the most sacred Heart of the ever immaculate Virgin Mary, most willingly, offer to Thee during this whole day, not excepting the smallest part therefrom, all my intentions and thoughts, all my affections and desires, all my words and actions.

AN ACT OF FAITH.

O my God! I firmly believe all the sacred truths which Thy holy Catholic Church believes and teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, who neither canst deceive nor be deceived.

AN ACT OF HOPE.

O my God! relying on Thy infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain the pardon of my sins, the assistance of Thy grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus-Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

AN ACT OF CHARITY.

O my God, I love Thee above all things with my whole heart and soul, purely because Thou art infinitely perfect and deserving of all love. I love also my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

AN ACT OF THANKSGIVING.

O glorious Trinity! I praise Thee and give Thee thanks for the numberless benefits Thou hast bestowed upon me. I thank Thee, O Heavenly Father, for having created me to Thy own image and likeness, and for having preserved me to this day. I thank Thee, O merciful Son, for having redeemed me by Thy death, and so often fed me with Thy precious body and blood. I thank Thee, O Holy Spirit, for having cleansed my soul by Thy grace in holy baptism, for having called me to the true faith, and so often washed me from my sins in the sacrament of penace. I thank Thee, O most bountiful God, for preserving me this night, and granting me this day to serve Thee. I earnestly invite all the saints of heaven and earth to join with me in praise and thanksgiving for Thy infinite goodness.

Pause a while, and foresee the sins you are most subject to, and firmly resolve to avoid them.

AN ACT OF CONTRITION.

O my God! I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offended Thee, my God, who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.

Make a firm resolution to avoid evil, and to do good.

Adorable Jesus! Divine model of that perfection to which we should all aspire! I will endeavor this day to follow Thy example; to be mild, humble, chaste, zealous, patient, charitable and resigned. Incline my heart to keep Thy commandments. I am resolved to watch over myself with the greatest diligence, and to live soberly, justly and piously for the time to come. I will take care of my ways, that I may not offend with my tongue. I will turn away my eyes, that they may not see vanity, and I will be particularly attentive not to relapse this day into my accustomed failings, but to struggle against them with Thy gracious assistance. Enlighten my mind, purify my heart and guide my steps, that I may pass all my life in Thy Divine Service. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

THE ANGELIC SALUTATION.

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

THE APOSTLES' CREED.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell, the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

May the Almighty God have mercy on me, and forgive me my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.

May the almighty and merciful Lord give me pardon, absolution, and remission of all my sins. Amen.

Invoke the Blessed Virgin, your Angel Guardian, and your Patron Saint.

O holy Virgin, Mother of God, my advocate and patroness, pray for thy poor servant; show thyself a mother to me; and Thou, O blessed Spirit, whom God in His mercy hath appointed to watch over me, intercede for me this day, that I may not stray from the path of virtue. Thou also, O happy Saint, whose name I bear, pray for me, that I may serve God faithfully in this life, as thou hast done, and glorify Him eternally with thee in heaven. Amen.

THE ANGELUS DOMINI.

To be said morning, noon, and night, in memory of the adorable mystery of the Incarnation of our Blessed Saviour.

1. The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary; and she conceived of the Holy Ghost. Hail Mary, etc.

2. Behold the handmaid of the Lord; may it be done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary, etc.

3. And the word was made flesh; and dwelt among us. Hail Mary, etc.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His passion and cross be brought to the glory of His resurrection; through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O Almighty and Eternal God! prostrate at the feet of Thy holy and awful Majesty, I adore Thee with all possible reverence. I believe and hold for certain all Thou hast revealed to Thy holy Church. I hope in Thy infinite goodness and mercy, and I love Thee with all my heart.

O my God! I give Thee thanks, through Jesus Christ, for all the favors Thou hast bestowed upon me, especially for creating me to Thy own image and likeness, for redeeming me with Thy Son's precious blood, for making me a Chris- tian, and preserving me this day. I beseech the Blessed Virgin, and all the saints, to give Thee thanks for ever and ever. Amen.

O my God! grant me the grace to know wherein I have offended Thee, and to have a perfect sorrow for my sins.

Here pause a little to ascertain what sins you may have committed:

1. By thought: Willingly entertaining bad, angry, impatient, or uncharitable thoughts and desires.

2. By word: Using bad language, cursing, lying, etc.

3. By deed: Being disobedient, rude, cross and unkind; having evil or dangerous company; doing an immodest action; being idle.

4. By omission: Neglecting your prayers, your lessons or some other duty.

THE CONFITEOR.

I confess to Almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I beseech the blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

May the Almighty God have mercy on me, and forgive me my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.

May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant me pardon, absolution, and remission of all my sins. Amen.

Because all my sins displease Thee, O Sovereign Goodness, I am heartily sorry for having committed them; I ask pardon for them, and promise, by the help of Thy grace, not only to avoid the like faults for the future, but also to do penance for them.

O most holy Virgin! be a mother to me: pray for me, now, and at the hour of my death.

O my good Angel! whom God has appointed to be my guardian, enlighten me, protect me, and guard me in all my actions. Amen.

Holy Mass, what it is

HOLY MASS.

The Holy Mass is the sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, which is offered to our heavenly Father on the altar under the appearances of bread and wine. It was instituted by Our Lord Himself in order to represent and continue that sacrifice which he made on the cross.

The best manner of hearing Mass is to offer it to God with the priest for the same purpose for which it is said, viz.: 1st, To honor and glorify God; 2d, To thank Him for all the graces bestowed on the whole world; 3d, To satisfy God's justice for the sins of men; 4th, To obtain all graces and blessings.

We should assist at Mass with great interior recollection and piety, and with every outward mark of respect and devotion.

Rules for Assisting at Mass

Rules for Assisting at Mass.

THESE rules indicate the attitude which the Church desires, as most suitable to the various parts of the Mass. They do not bind so strictly as to make it a sin to depart from them, for sufficient reasons.

LOW MASS.

Rise when the priest is going to the altar.

Kneel from the beginning to the end of Mass, except during the Gospels.

HIGH MASS.

Rise when the priest is going to the altar.

Kneel when Mass commences.

Rise at the "Gloria."

Sit when the priest is seated.

Rise when the priest kisses the altar.

Stand whilst the prayers are sung.

Sit during the reading of the lesson (Epistle).

Rise for the Gospel, after which remain standing, whilst the priest recites the "Credo" and genuflect with him at the words "Et incarnatus est," etc. (i. e., And He was made flesh, etc.)

Sit when the priest is seated, but kneel on both knees whilst the choir sings: "Et incarnatus est de spiritu sancto ex Maria Virgine; Et homo factus est."

Rise when the priest kisses the altar and remain standing till the priest has sung "Oremus."

Sit till the priest commences to sing "Per omnia sæcula sæculorum."

Stand during the Preface.

Kneel from the "Sanctus" to the second ablution.

Then sit till the priest kisses the altar.

All stand during the last prayer.

All kneel to receive the blessing.

During the last Gospel all stand.

(If before the sermon the "Veni Creator" is sung by the choir, all kneel.)

The Asperges

The Asperges.

While the Priest sprinkles Holy Water before Solemn Mews on Sundays, the following Anthems are sung:

Ant. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, O Lord, and I shall be cleansed: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

Ps. Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy.

V. Glory be to the Father, etc.

Ant. Thou shalt, etc.

The Priest, returning to the foot of the altar says:

V. Show us, O Lord, thy mercy.

R. And grant us thy salvation.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come unto thee.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

Graciously hear us, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, Eternal God; and vouchsafe to send thy holy angel from heaven, who may protect, visit and defend all who dwell in this habitation. Through Christ, our Lord.

R. Amen.

From Easter to Whit-Sunday, inclusively, instead of the foregoing Antiphon Asperges me, etc., the following is sung, and Alleluia is added to the Versicles and Responsories.

Ant. I saw water coming forth from the temple, on the right side. Alleluia! And all those to whom this water came, were saved, and shall say, Alleluia!

Ps. Give praise to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

V. Glory be to the Father, etc.

Ant. I saw water, etc.

Therefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, and you, father, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

At the Collects.

We humbly beseech Thee, O Almighty and eternal God, mercifully to give ear to the prayers of Thy servant, which he offers to Thee in the name of Thy Church, and in behalf of us Thy people; accept them to the honor of Thy name, and the good of our souls, and grant us all those blessings which may any way contribute to our salvation: who livest and reignest, one God.
