Chapter 8
Acknowledgments lam greatly indebted to my supervisors, Prof. Dr. Eveline Kilian (HU) and Prof. Dr. Mark Turner (KCL), for their patience, support, attentive reviews, and corrections. Many of the reflections in this book resulted from long talks and discussions with them and I would like to thank them for all of the work they have put into supervising my project. I would also like to thank PD Dr. Brigitte Heymann at Humboldt for the support and encouragement she provided throughout my master’s and my PhD. I am also thankful to CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior) and DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) for their four years of funding; this doctoral dissertation would not have been possible without their financial support. I give many thanks to both Humboldt-University in Berlin and to King’s College London for offering an exciting research environment that immensely contributed both to my work and to the development of fruitful academic activities, such as City-Centric, an interdisciplinary urban studies group that I was lucky enough to co-convene with my colleague Penny Newell.
Iam also grateful to my friends in Germany, in England, and in Brazil who have been part of this project at different stages. In Berlin, I had the privilege of making friends who became family and who offered a great deal of support in moments of difficulty and homesickness: Barbara Marcel, Camila Puls, Camila Rhodi, Camilla Ribas, Cathrin H6fs, Emmanuel Nakamura, Emita Jülich, Juliana Vaz, Leonardo Pascutti, Lucas Paes de Melo, Mariana Teixeira, Murilo Polla, Paola Ghetti, Pablo Nicolitz, and Veronica Lemos. I am very grateful to have discussed my work during five and a half years with the dearest and most supporting colleagues and friends in my research group at Humboldt: Aileen Behrendt, Anne-Julia Schoen, Barbara Wiinnenberg, Julia Schulz, Katrin Frisch, and Kathrin Tordasi; I offer many thanks for the comments and long hours of talking during colloquia, office-breaks, or dinners. In Hamburg, I would like to thank my dear friends Pedro Martins and Elena Montes for inviting me to a ‘writing retreat’ at the final stage of the writing-up of this thesis. To Pedro, I am greatly indebted for the warm words in moments of exasperation and for the great help in revising my text.
In London, I was very lucky to be at home with friends who had already been part of my life since my years as an undergraduate student in Brazil. I became settled quickly, thanks to the warmth, friendship, and love of Julia Fecchio, Joao Grando, Marianna

Aragao, Leticia Dyniewicz, and Ricardo Pitorini. In Brazil, I would like to thank my friends, who were a great support and who cheered me on every time that it was necessary. These friends include Bruna Tiussu, Camila Braga, Carlos Pissardo, Fernanda Steiner Perin, Isabel Ribeiro, Luciana Dyniewicz, Maria Carolina Diniz, Maria Cristina Motta, Patricia Ribeiro, Samia Barbosa, Soraia Vilela, and Wladimir D’Andrade. I am particularly grateful for my parents’ and family’s affective support and their unconditional encouragement, especially in the last year of writing this book in 2017; the biggest advantage of having a huge family is that you are always surrounded by both love and laughter. I also give my very special thanks to my sister, Renata, who kindly created the stunning artwork for my book’s cover. Lastly, I am thankful for Vladimir’s love, partnership, warmth, support, patience, revisions, and corrections throughout the course of writing. This book is dedicated to him, who consistently gives me care, love, and friendship.
