Chapter Four
The printed version of a manuscript of translation undertaken using the gandul method. The commentary flows around the inner box that contains the Qur'anic text and its interlinear translation, the collection of Muhammad Dluha Luthfillah, CC-BY 4.0.
Notes on Transliteration and Translation
This text follows the IJMES transliteration system for Arabic words. Indonesian words derived from Arabic, most notably ulama and mushaf, are written in plain italics without transliteration. The English Qur'an translation in use is that of M. A.S. Abdel Haleem, with some adjustments when necessary, unless otherwise indicated.
The title of the Qur'an translation that is the focus of this study has been written differently in different contexts, owing to a combination of developments in the Indonesian spelling and transliteration systems, and also to inconsistencies in usage in the sources. It has been penned variously as Al Ourdan dan Terdjemahnja, Al Qurüan dan Terjemahnya, Al Qur'an dan Terjemahnya, and Al-Quran dan Terjemahnya. The most popular title in current use is Al-Qur'an dan Terjemahnya. However, the most recent edition (2019), Al-Qur'an dan Terjemahannya, has updated the title once more, although this form is yet to gain wider recognition. This study uses the most popular title, Al-Qur'an dan Terjemahnya, throughout, or simply its acronym, QT.
In some parts of the book, where I take a close look at the development of the translation, I present the first edition and only those subsequent editions that introduce changes to the translation. Thus if, for example, I address the first and third editions, this means that the changes to which I am referring occurred in the third edition, and did not feature in the second or fourth editions.
