Prefatory Note

The first, second, fifth, and sixth of the Essays included in the present volume are reprinted from a volume published by the Author in 1856 under the title Essays Biographical and Critical : chiefly on English Poets. The Essays on Shelley and Keats are now added. Two similar volumes of revised Essays will follow; the next of which will be Chatterton: A Story of the, Year 1770.
