Preface

The following pages contain commemorative records of what God's people have suffered for the sake of tjje gospel. It is not our purpose to present a history of the martyrs, nor* a biography of those whose lives were suJSiciently important to make them worthy of having their usefulness perpetuated in that way; but omitting even the names of many who are deserving and who were justly given place in ancient martyrologies, we have endeavored to give our readers a brief review of martyrs of all ages, to stimulate them in their Christian growth and missionary labors; believing that by the example of Christian heroism herein depicted, thousands of hearts will be stirred to renewed zeal for God and to greater diligence in saving the lost who are hurrying on to a Hell where all the murderers of God's fioly people, and where all the wicked of all the ages are to^be confined with the devil and his angels forever and forever. May God use the book to strengthen His army both in numbers and might, is our prayer.
