Dedication
Dedicated to the Upper Room on Mount Zion, in Jerusalem, and to the one hundred and twenty disciples who tarried there until they were ‘fendued with power from on high’’ (Luke 24:49; Acts 2:1-4); and to the promotion of Prayer Rooms in all churches everywhere and in all church conventions, to the end that the Holy Spirit may have His way in the church of today as He had with the disciples at Pentecost on the birthday of the church nineteen hundred years ago.
Preface
It has always seemed easier for men to honor the unseen member of the Triune God, than it has been to honor the One manifesting Himself upon the earth.
When Jesus was here in Person, men honored the God of Abraham and of Isaac, and of Jacob, but they rejected Jesus.
Now that the Holy Spirit is the resident member of the Godhead on earth, men rightly give the chief place of honor to the Risen Christ, but they either ignore the Holy Spirit or else they do not know Him. There is more confusion of thought concerning the Holy Spirit than there is of either the Father or the Son.
Multitudes of people who believe as much in the personality of the Holy Spirit as they believe in the personality of Jesus Christ, want to know the Spirit as they know Jesus and as they know the Father; and we believe that if they are willing to go with us in this way that will be new to many people, they will find Him.
What we shall see and hear along this way will abundantly reward us for listening for His voice, and waiting for His power. Moses went up into a mountain where others had walked before
6 PREFACE him; but Moses heard God speaking to him, and saw God’s glory where others had failed to hear and see.
Many people have read the Bible and have come to know prophets and apostles and to understand the Lord Jesus, and have become His disciples; but few have known the Holy Spirit well enough to allow Him to give them power to bear witness.
It is one thing to know the Lord Jesus and to be His disciple; it is quite another thing to be a witness for Him. Jesus came to bear witness to the truth, and then He returned to the Father. Now the Holy Spirit is the chief witness, ‘*He shall testify of me’’ (John 15:26), and ‘‘It is the Spirit that beareth witness’? (1 John 5:6); and we ought to become as familiar with His life on earth as we are with that of Christ, and then He can make us witnesses, ‘‘But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me’’ (Acts dasa
If men knew Jesus Christ, they would become His disciples without delay; and the reason many do not know Him is because those who have been their teachers have either ignored the Holy Spirit or else they have not been willing to be used as channels of His power. |
The life of Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Godhead, has been written by many different
PREFACE 7 authors; but so far as we know this is the first attempt to write a life of the Holy Spirit, the Third Person.
The author’s purpose has been to create a new interest in the Holy Spirit in His relation to the Father, and to the Son, and to believers; and to help make it possible for those who want to know Him more perfectly to know Him so well that He may not only deepen and enrich their spiritual lives but also make them real witnesses for Christ, and use them in evangelistic revivals throughout the world.
‘‘Come Holy Spirit, for moved by Thee The Prophets wrote and spoke: Unlock the Truth: Thyself the Key,
Unseal the sacred Book.’’

CHAPTER XV. BIBLE REFERENCES IN WHICH THR Hoty Spirit Is MENTIONED _ —_ 231
Be still! Just now be still!
Something thy soul hath never heard,
Something unknown to any song of bird. Something unknown to any wind, or wave, or star, A message from the Fatherland afar,
That with sweet joy the homesick soul shall thrill, Cometh to thee if thou canst but be still.
Be still! Just now be still!
There comes a presence very mild and sweet; White are the sandals of His noiseless feet. It is the Comforter whom Jesus sent To teach thee what the words He uttered meant. The willing, waiting spirit He doth fill. If thou wouldst hear the message, Dear soul, be still! | —Streams in the Desert.*
