Preface

DV THE VEN. ARCHDEACON SINCLAIR. LONDON: ELLIOT STOCK, 62, PATERNOSTER ROW, E.C. 1898. Ho MY FATHER, WHO TAUGHT ME TO LOVE AND HELr MY FELLOW-MEN AND TO THE FELLOW-LABOURERS AND FRIENDS AMONG WHOM I WORK, THIS BOOK IS GRATEFULLY INSCRIBED.

PREFACE.

. 1\ /IR. PANDIAN is a native philanthropist in India, -I» A who is much interested in the condition of the Pariahs, and the welfare of the people generally. Having come to England to spread information about our Indian fellow-subjects, he has compiled a series of sketches of contemporary life in Indian villages. It is difficult for the great mass of English people — only a very small fraction of whom have a chance of visiting Hindustan — to understand much about the realities of that great empire. Mr. Pandian's book, written in pleasant and easy style, and from the standpoint of complete and familiar knowledge, will be a useful help to them towards a better acquaintance. WILLIAM SINCLAIR, Archdeacon of London. Chapter House, St. Paul's Cathedral, London, E.C. January, 189S. CONTENTS 1 THE VILLAGE.
