Preface

In this new edition the plan of the Introduction has been considerably changed, the Editors believing that the present form is more in harmony with the best teaching of the day. The selection of extracts has been greatly altered and much enlarged. While favourite passages from the older writers which are still considered standard subjects for elocutionary practice have been retained, many pieces by living authors which have not before appeared in similar collections have been added. These have all undergone the actual test of the public platform, and will, it is believed, be found admirably adapted both for the development of elocutionary skill and for effective public recital. The Publishers desire to tender their hearty acknowledgments to the various authors and owners of copyrights who have so generously granted permission to make use of valuable pieces.

Special care has been taken to obtain consent for the insertion of copyright matter ; but if it should happen that any such extracts have been unwittingly included without sanction, the Publishers beg to express regret for unintentional neglect. W. & R. CHAMBERS, Limited. C O JSs T E 1ST T S. Page
