Preface

. The information contained in this Work has been principally compiled from Danish and French Authorities, the particulars of which may thus be briefly stated : — The list of authorised Trading Stations, given on page 7, has been furnished by the Danish Government. With regard to these Trading Stations, it is stated that some of them are only " projected," which will account for a few not being mentioned in any existing chart or map. The information on the Currents, Ice, with general remarks on the Navi gation, given on pages 8 — 19, is derived from a Danish publication by Lieut. C. F. Wandel, of the Royal Danish Navy, 1879 ; two translations of the same having been used for the purpose — one by Mr. 0. T. Olsen, F.L.S., and the other published in a pamphlet by the Admiralty in 1891. The Sailing Directions for the various Fiords, Ports and Anchorages around Iceland, which form the main body of the Work, are translated from a French publication entitled " Instructions Nautiques sur les Cotes d'lslande," by M. Barlatier de Mas, Capitaine de Fregate, Officier de la Legion d'Honneur, &c, issued in 1862.

These instructions have been brought up to date as far as possible by the addition of more recent informa tion from various sources, maiuly from Hydrographic Notices issued by the French and United States Governments. There is, however, much room for improvement, especially in the descriptions of the numerous fiords aud bays of Iceland, these having been only cursorily examined at the time of the Danish Survey. It is, therefore, hoped that Navigators will point out what ever inaccuracies or defects they may come across, so that future editions may be amended and improved. H. D. J. October 1st, 1896.
