WINCHESTER. PREFACE, The following sheets are submitted to the public under considerable disadvantages. It was the original intention of the highly respected author, under whose name they appear, to have ascertained, by this essay, the quantum of encouragement which a work of the kind would obtain ; and, if this had proved adequate to the expenses, to have proceeded with a similar review of the other Rivers of Hampshire, so as to embrace the entire County. However, circumstances of domestic affliction, and a rapidly declining state of health, interfered with his plan before the initial volume was completed. Much is it to be regretted, that a mind of such unusual vigour, and attainments of so eminent and varied a character, should have been thus unpropitiously arrested in their bearing upon an object equally interesting to the curious, and valuable to society at large.

But the labour of the author will not have been thrown away. Many, in the days of his mental and physical activity, have had opportunities of appreciating the accuracy of his general information, the clearness of his judgment, the refine ment of his taste, and the pleasing vivacity of his conversation. These, and they are not a few, will doubtless welcome with cor diality a tardy, though perhaps an imperfect monument of his talent. To them the following pages may possibly suggest— " Invenies aninii pignora raulta mei. ' VI

Preface

. With reference to a more extended circulation, it has been deemed advisable to render this first part co-extensive with its original design. Accordingly, after much unavoidable loss of time, the publishers have availed themselves of the re searches and talents of a gentleman fully qualified for the task entrusted to him ; and readers will decide how far the por tion of the work for which he is responsible* agrees with the commencement. Further apology will, it is hoped, be allowed for omissions in the Appendix. Some documents referred to by the deceased author have not, after persevering search, been obtained ; and if, in the illustrations, any defect be noticed, the publishers respectfully assure their friends that some extraordinary ob stacle must have arisen to frustrate their best endeavours to fill up the outline traced for them.

How far they may be enabled to prosecute the projected extension of the work, the reception of this volume will shewr. Winchester, 1839. * Beginning at Section vi. page 327. A considerable collection of materials for the sketches of Hursley and North Baddesley was left by the deceased author, but not in a state for publication. As far as possible, those materials have been incorporated into the sketches given in thc following sheets. The designs for the illustrations (with the exception of South Stoneham, by Mr. O. B. Carter, of Winchester) were furnished by a gentleman residing in the country described. TABLE OF CONTENTS.
