Preface
. The county of Renfrew, though, in point of extent, one of the least in Scotland, has many claims to general notice. It was for ages the peculiar patrimony and chief place of residence of the illustrious family, which for several centu ries gave sovereigns to these realms, and whose descendants, in a line direct or lateral, are still found on the thrones of the first kingdoms in Europe. The Noble families of Abercorn, Blantyre, Cathcart, Dundonald, Eglinton, Glen cairn, Lenox, Lyle, Ross, and Sempill, had their origin, or early residence, in this county, and have their history necessarily blended with that of the county itself. Among its principal proprietors, it had the Brisbanes, Crawfurds, Cunninghames, Dennistouns, Flemings, Hamiltons, Houstouns, Maxwells, Mures, Napiers, Polloks, Porterfields, Ralstouns, Shaws, Walkinshaws, and Wallaces, of whom, nearly the whole, have great possessions in it until this day.
In other circumstances, which confer distinction, Renfrewshire ranks very high. Its commerce and manufactures have risen to a pitch almost unrivalled ; its agriculture is most respectable ; while its population, in proportion to extent, is believed to be the first in Scotland. This important county found in Crawfurd a historian equally distinguished for profound research and minute accuracy. His history is still considered a first authority, particularly as to the origin and progress of families. But this book is now rarely to be met with, and can only be obtained at a high price. In the present work a copy of it is reprinted verbatim. There was a new edition of it published in 1782, by William Semple, but even it has now become scarce. That edition has been carefully consulted, and the useful additions in it are all retained in this.
In presenting this new edition to the public, the editor will, in few words, state the authorities from which the additional matter has been compiled. So far as regards the localities of Renfrewshire, he has made great use of Ainsley's map, on a scale of two inches to a mile, published in 1796. With this lie has combined his own knowledge, obtained by frequently traversing the county in all directions, not only, as lately, in the view of this publication, but for several years before it was thought of. To all that personal observation has furnished, is to be added much distinct information received from the different proprietors, from the ministers of most ofthe parishes, and from the active friendship of intelligent individuals in different parts of the county.
PREFACE.
. The valued rent of the different lands was taken from the Cess books in 1817, (see note, page 266). Their extent has been estimated, partly from authentic information, partly from probable conjecture. In cases in which no satisfactory information could be obtained, it was in vain to endeavour to ascer tain it. Individuals, however, from their own knowledge, may be able to place the extent of property in the blanks which have been left for that purpose in the proper column in the table. On the subject of manufactures, the Editor owes much to information com municated by William Carlyle, Esq; Provost of Paisley ; and, on that of com merce, to different gentlemen in Greenock and Port Glasgow. With respect to the main subject of the work, the descent of Families ; so far as regards those of the nobilty, the circumstances have been collected chiefly from the Peerage of Scotland, published in 1813, by Wood, the best work on the subject that has appeared; the account here given is greatly abridged from the original of that correct writer, who is not answerable for the manner in which it is drawn up.
The continuation till the present time has, in most cases, been obligingly communicated by the noble families themselves. The genealogy of the many respectable families of the other proprietors of the county, has been continued from Crawfurd by materials, in nearly every case, furnished by themselves, or which have been submitted to their inspection, and have met with their approbation. From the great influx of new matter, during the time of printing, it became necessary to abridge greatly the accounts previously written, in order that the work might not much exceed the extent originally proposed. After all, it has been lengthened out considerably beyond those limits. This abridgement ex tends less or more to every branch discussed, and will account for the brevity in them all. The additional size of the volume has rendered it impracticable to give a list of subscribers ; but those highly respectable names will appear in a supple mental, though separate work, to be entituled, " Views of the Noblemen and Gentlemens' Seats in the County of Renfrew," to which will be prefixed a concise History of Renfrewshire, a curious work, written in 1696, by that eminent antiquary, Hamilton of Wishaw ; copied, by permission, from a M.S. in the advocate's library, a prospectus of which will soon be issued.
